Nel 1816, l’eruzione del vulcano Tambora in Indonesia provocò un anno piovoso e senza estate. Questo insolito clima portò diversi amici a radunarsi e organizzare una gara letteraria, alla quale Mary Shelley presentò Frankenstein o il moderno Prometeo. I personaggi di questa storia sono entrati nell’immaginario collettivo, con varie distorsioni; a risaltare su tutti per notorietà, non è il dottor Frankenstein quanto la sua creatura, un super-uomo creato assemblando porzioni di cadaveri.
Il dottor Frankenstein conduce arditi esperimenti sull’elettricità e sul sistema nervoso; la sua creatura vive, e si mostra intelligente e sensibile, ma di aspetto insolito e ripugnante. La creazione mal riuscita, un diverso che la società rifiuta, diviene corrotto e violento, e vaga nell’ombra come minaccia perenne e misteriosa al proprio “padre” come all’umanità che l’ha allontanato.
La Shelley ha infuso nella trama paure e angosce comuni a tutti, anche a lei stessa, non preoccupandosi di innescare una lotta tra bene e male o di svelare i meccanismi della vita, ma osservando come la sofferenza possa nascondersi dove meno ce l’aspettiamo e come la cultura e la scienza non portino necessariamente alla felicità.

In 1816, the Mount Tambora eruption in Indonesia caused a rainy year without summer. This unusual climate incited several friends to gather and organize a literary contest, in which Mary Shelley introduced Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus . The characters of this story have entered in the collective unconscious, with various distortions; the one who stands out on all the others for notoriety is not Dr. Frankenstein properly but his creature, a super-man created by assembling portions of corpses.
Dr. Frankenstein conducts daring experiments on electricity and nervous system ; his creature lives, and appears intelligent and sensitive, even if with an unusual and repugnant appearance. The botched creature, an odd man refused by society, becomes corrupt and violent, walking in shadow as a mysterious and perennial threat for his “father” and for the humanity which has rejected him.
