Innanzitutto parlaci di te: dicci chi sei, dove vivi e di che ti occupi.
Mi chiamo Santi Musmeci, sono siciliano di professione architetto, ho trentadue anni e da sette vivo a Beijing nella PRC.
Una prima domanda sulla Cina. E’ stato un approccio casuale? Come è nata la scelta di spostarti lì?
Il mio primo approccio in Cina è avvenuto nel 2009 esattamente a Beijing, nella più famosa Università Cinese, la Tsinghua University, grazie ad un workshop internazionale organizzato dall’Università La Sapienza di Roma presso la quale stavo conseguendo la Laurea Specialistica in Architettura. Da lì è cominciato tutto, forse amore a prima vista. Durante il workshop sono riuscito a farmi ricevere dal Rettore dell’università prof. Zhu Wenyi, chiedendo di poter preparare la tesi di laurea nella sua Università, utilizzando le loro risorse tecnologiche. Durante la stesura della tesi ho ricevuto una interessante proposta di collaborazione presso il BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design), che ho accettato con molto entusiasmo e che di conseguenza ha rivoluzionato il corso della mia vita.
Parlaci della tua esperienza come +OUT: qual è il motore che ha mosso dall’inizio la vostra azione progettuale? Quali le intenzioni professionali?
+OUT è un sogno diventato poi realtà, nato tra i banchi dell’università insieme a Sebastiano Maccarrone, attuale mio socio, già collega di facoltà e fraterno amico. Il progetto ha subito un rallentamento durante gli anni di apprendistato che entrambi abbiamo trascorso in diversi studi internazionali, tra Roma, Los Angeles, Beijing e Shanghai. Nel 2013 siamo ripartiti da Pechino insieme ad un partner cinese con l’obbiettivo di creare un gruppo interdisciplinare che si occupasse di design a trecentosessanta gradi.

First of all, please, introduce yourself : tell us who you are, where you live and what you take care of.
My name is Santi Musmeci and I’m a Sicilian architect, 32 years old and since 7 I live in Beijing, in the PRC.
First question about China. Was your approach just random? How did your decision to move there start?
My first approach to China took place in 2009 just in Beijing, at Tsinghua University, the most famous in China, thanks to an international workshop organized by La Sapienza University of Rome, where I was getting Architecture degree. It all started from there, perhaps it was love at first sight. During the workshop, I was able to meet the university rector prof. Zhu Wenyi, asking him to prepare the thesis in its university, using their technological resources. During the writing of my dissertation I received an interesting proposal for collaboration at the BIAD (Beijing Institute of Architectural Design) which I accepted with much enthusiasm and which has consequently revolutionized the course of my life.
Tell us about your experience as + OUT: What is from the beginning the engine that drives your project action? What were your professional intentions?
+ OUT is a dream which became reality, it started at the university with Sebastiano Maccarrone, my current partner, former faculty colleague and like a brother to me. The project has slowed down during the years of apprenticeship that we both spent in several international studies, in Rome, Los Angeles, Beijing and Shanghai. In 2013 we started again from Beijing, together with a Chinese partner, with the aim to create an interdisciplinary comprehensive design group.
